About Cornell Companies, Inc.

Cornell Companies, Inc. (Cornell) is an industry leader in correctional and treatment services to local, state and federal agencies. Since 1973, when our companies first started operations, Cornell has expanded to provide a wide range of corrections and therapeutic programs for adults and juveniles, including federal and state low to maximum security prisons, city jails, detention centers, residential re-entry centers, drug and alcohol treatment programs, and juvenile detention, treatment and alternative education centers. Cornell currently operates more than 70 facilities serving four federal agencies, 15 states and the District of Columbia as well as numerous cities and counties. For 35 years we have partnered with the government agencies we serve to provide quality care and treatment in a cost-effective environment.

Cornell also brings valuable economic benefits to the local communities in which we operate by providing a stable employment base, annual taxes on property that public providers would not normally pay, and the volunteering of over 280,000 hours of community service per year.

Cornell’s experience with a wide range of services allows customers access to programs and services focused on treatment and release preparation. Among the services offered are:

  • substance abuse/addiction counseling, education and treatment
  • individual, family and group counseling
  • vocational training
  • gender-specific treatment
  • behavior management strategies
  • individual case management
  • therapeutic communities

Blending Incarceration
& Treatment...

Government leaders and justice system specialists increasingly recognize that just “warehousing” criminal offenders leads to further crime and a return to the criminal justice system after their release. Studies have also found treatment to be cost-effective in reducing the costs of crime. According to the Council of State Governments’ (CSG) Reentry Policy Report, for every $1 spent on treatment for offenders, there is an up to $7 crime-related cost savings through increased earnings and reduced health care expenditures.

Cornell is uniquely placed to offer to our government clients a range of pre-release services to focus on assisting those charged to our care, whether adults or juveniles, in preparing for the “second chance” that they may need to successfully transition and begin a productive law-abiding life with their families and communities. Cornell offers the unique distinction of having worked extensively with both adult and juvenile populations.
